Over 40% of Mobile Web Traffic is to Social Networks

Opera Software, publisher of the Opera Mini browser, has released its first “State of Mobile Web” report covering the first quarter of 2008. One of the most interesting facts in the report is that social networks account for 40% of worldwide mobile web traffic, while accounting for over 60% in the US, South Africa and Indonesia.

The report also shows that data traffic on the mobile web has been growing very quickly in the past few months. In fact, it actually does resemble the fabled “hockey stick” graph that everyone in the high tech industry jokes about.

Another interesting fact is that most traffic is to websites (77%) and not WAP or .mobi sites (23%) and Opera expects this to number to continue to decline as more people use Opera Mini.

Jon S. von Tetzchner, CEO, Opera Software said “We believe there should be no difference in the information that is available to you whether you use the fastest computer or a refurbished mobile phone. Now in 2008, it seems we are getting closer to the goal of One Web”.
