New information released from global ad network InMobi shows that the Indonesian mobile market is growing fast and is very mobile internet-centric.
Plus, the iPhone is not at all the favorite smartphone in the market!
Indonesia is one of the fastest growing mobile markets in the world. Currently there are close to 130 million subscribers, representing a penetration of just over 50%. And the subscriber base is growing at close to 20% per year.
Already the mobile population far outnumber the number of active internet users by a factor of 5 to 1 as internet usage is fairly low at about 10%.
InMobi estimates that the population of mobile interent user has doubled in the past 12 months, reaching about 9 million currently.
Regarding handsets, 80% of all handsets sold are web enabled. And recently, the popularity of RIM handsets has been skyrocketing compared to other smartphone models such as the iPhone.
From January 2009 to June 2009, mobile ad requests seen on the InMobi network for Blackberry phones increased by 842%, compared to mobile ad requests on Indonesia iPhones, which increased by 205%.
As with many other countries, mobile internet usage is predominantly a youthful phenomenon.
Approximately 53% of the users being between 18 and 27 years old, and 82% of all mobile web users are male.
Clearly a market this big and growing this fast will become an interesting area for mobile advertising and marketing.
