Will Apple Build Ads Into iPhone?

google-apple2.gifSince Apple bought Quattro Wireless at the end of last year there has been speculation that Apple might decide to enter the mobile ad business.

A recent job offering on the Apple website seems to confirm their intentions.

The job description is on the Apple Jobs site, and reads as follows:

“The iPhone team is looking for a manager to work on supporting next generation mobile advertising. This will involve managing a talented team of developers working on the frameworks included in the iPhone SDK. The ideal candidate will be responsible for the day to day management of the engineering, as well as related frameworks. He or she will spend much of their time interacting with the engineering team, program managers, other engineering teams, and executives. We need someone who is comfortable working in a fast paced environment with rapidly changing priorities.”

This suggests that Apple is planning on building ads directly into the iPhone SDK. Although no details are available, it is possible that this level of integration might lead to an improved customer experience with ads, or perhaps a more flexible, measurable ad system for brands.

If Apple does enter the mobile advertising space, this will be a continuation of the the trend of Apple and Google’s business interest overlapping more and more. The two companies were close business partners until Google began to move more into the mobile phone space with the launch of the Android mobile operating system, and then later the Nexus One phone.

One thing is for certain, it will be interesting to see how this pans out in the coming months.
