Android Developer

Position: Android Developer (33)
Location: Paris and London
Company: A company developing a new contact management experience and integrated messaging application for Android, PC, and other platforms.

The company’s aim is to improve communications in the mobile space, providing a new contact management experience and integrated messaging features. Supporting voice, SMS, IM and Social Network messaging the system will enable custom voicemail and identity management for all a users contacts.

Initially available on Android and PC, it will soon be rolling out on other platforms, including iPhone and HTML5- available to everyone, no matter which carrier or handset they use, or where they are in the world. The platform will be a central server with Web Services API (REST) with XMPP and SyncML protocols for messaging and contact synchronisation respectively and will also interface with voicemail platforms and VoIP services. For this reason, Android development will be complex and require great attention to detail. In addition, the user experience will be paramount, with a large investment in interface and interaction design.

You are a bilingual (French/English) highly experienced and talented Android engineer who will be based in Paris and will work with teams based in both Paris and London pushing the limits of devices and writing reliable, telecoms grade code from the start. With one or more commercial products under your belt and experience of Scrum, you will be familiar with Agile methodologies, ideally with experience of JIRA/GreenHopper.

One or more years commercial Android experience will be combined with experience of telephony API and knowledge of scheduling, Address Book interactions, protocols, security, etc. After more than 3 years in mobile software development you will understand the constraints of mobile development, battery life, small screens, limited keyboards, etc. Above all, you will be a user of mobile software and understand why the iPhone is so good for consumers and why geeky applications are not.

A great team player you will use Agile methodologies throughout and therefore being a good contributor is paramount. Loner genius types are not required, unless they are very, very good. Likewise a ‘can-do attitude’ is vital. Anyone can all think of good reasons why something won’t work, but we are looking for are those people who can come up with solutions. Ability to write great code is a given. Attention to detail and a desire to make the best possible experience for the consumer is a must. You should be experienced with source code control tools, bug tracking and reporting tools and know how to work within a fast moving development team. Able to work at internet start-up speeds, you like to maintain a telecoms attitude to reliability.

On a contract basis to start with, the role can become permanent should performance and conditions be right.
