distimo_logo.gifApp Stores are the real hub of activity in the mobile world these days, and having an up-to-date understanding of the key trends in this area can be crucial for a business.

Distimo is an app store analytics company built to solve the challenges created by a widely fragmented app store marketplace. This latest report from Distimo takes a look at in-app billing, as well as reporting the highest ranking paid and free apps from the Apple App Store, BlackBerry App World, Google Android Market, Nokia Ovi Store, Palm App Catalog and Windows Marketplace.

The data for this report was gathered from the Distimo network and represents app store activity across the US market.

In terms of “in-app billing”, one very interesting fact is that the iPad apps are 5 times as likely to have in-app billing as iPhone apps. This maybe because the iPad apps were all released after Apple implemented in-app billing solution. It may also simply reflect that the iPad is being used more as a media consumption device which would naturally require a payment system.

Regarding different application categories, Social Networks and Games had the highest percentage of in-app billing, at 25% and 17% respectively for the iPad, and 4% and 4% for the iPhone.

The chart below shows figures for additional app categories, and the full report provides even more information.

This report also looks at the top ranked apps with in-app billing. The information is divided into free apps (shown below) and paid apps.
