GSMA Launches Mobile App Challenges For Brands and Bands

mobile-app-challenge.gifThe GSMA has announced two new mobile app contests as part of the Mobile World Congress 2011.

The Brand App Challenge will see mobile app developers build “brand apps” for a selected group of global brands, including Coca Cola.

The Band App Challenge will have developers submit concepts to enable famous musical artists to engage with their fans throughout the world.

Prizes include cash, tickets, and trips to MWC Barcelona.

Brand App Challenge

Developers will create customized mobile apps for the participating brand sponsors based on the objectives and guidance provided by the individual brands. The apps will address a wide range of mobile operating systems including Android, Apple iOs, BlackBerry OS 6, HP webOS, Symbian and Windows Phone 7.

According to the GSMA the contest will run as follows:

  • Developers can sign up for the Brand App Challenge via an online portal and then upload a brief video demonstrating their proposed brand app. Submissions will be accepted until 10 January
  • Each brand will select five finalists who will then compete to become the ultimate winner for the respective brands. Finalists will be named approximately one month before Mobile World Congress 2011.
  • Winners will be announced at the Mobile World Congress and will receive cash awards and a trip to Barcelona.

Band App Challenge

“The Band App Audition has been created for app developers to showcase innovative and creative new ways that artists can engage and interact with fans around the world, across all mobile OS platforms,” said Michael O’Hara, chief market officer, GSMA. “This is the first competition of its kind, and we are delighted to have such a fantastic line-up of world leading and new artists participating in the contest.”

Leading bands such as Muse and Faithless, as well as emerging artists Metric and Eliza Doolittle will be participating.

App developers will submit 3 minute videos highlighting the key points of their proposed app.

The entries will be judged by the participating bands and their management. Prizes for the contest range from the opportunity to work with the bands to develop a full app, as well as meet and greet, tour tickets, and merchandise.

App developers can download individual mobile app briefs, along with graphics, tracks and other content assets from the Band Challenge website.

The App Challenges are an element of App Planet, the GSMA’s developer-focused program at Mobile World Congress.
