A new study from market research firm Juniper forecasts that the number of mobile consumers paying by phone for goods and services is set to grow very rapidly over the coming few years.

However, the increase will not be uniform across the world, with certain areas growing more rapidly but others seeing higher value payments.

Mobile commerce is clearly becoming one of the hot topics in the mobile industry, with many brands and retailers moving rapidly to allow customers to make purchases over the mobile channel. But one of the key parts of a purchase is the consumer payment, so mobile payments is also becoming an area of focus for many companies.

Juniper Research has released a couple of papers recently that look at the increasingly important mobile payments industry.

This year there will be about 1.8 billion mobile payment users globally. This is set to increase by some 40% over the next 4 years, reaching a total of 2.5 billion by 2015.

The growth will not be even however, and the Far East & China, plus India will represent a very large portion of these consumers.

However, consumers in certain areas are projected to transact larger value payments, so the total value of payments has a different distribution.

As shown in the chart below, the biggest regions for mobile payments in terms of total value are North America, Far East & China, and Western Europe.
