The latest news is that a couple of live installations are finally beginning to start up, in locations as diverse as China and the US.<\/p>\n
First of all in the USA, ISIS<\/strong>, the mobile commerce joint venture created by AT&T Mobility<\/strong>, T-Mobile USA<\/strong> and Verizon Wireless<\/strong> announced that the service was available in Austin<\/strong> and Salt Lake City<\/strong> using one of nine (with 11 more by the end of the year) ISIS ready devices. <\/p>\n \u201cThe launch of the Isis Mobile Wallet in Austin and Salt Lake City represents a milestone for both Isis and the mobile commerce industry,\u201d said Ryan Hughes<\/strong>, chief marketing officer, Isis. \u201cWith as many as 20 Isis Ready handsets headed to market by year end, we are experiencing an unprecedented level of support for NFC and consumer choice.<\/p>\n \u201cThe launch of the Isis Mobile Wallet is an important step toward accelerating mobile payments in the United States and maximizing convenience for consumers\u201d said Bill Gajda<\/strong>, head of mobile product, Visa Inc. \u201cIsis\u2019 open approach directly aligns with Visa\u2019s strategy of enabling consumers to make mobile payments with whatever device they choose using the trusted accounts they already have.\u201d<\/p>\n At the same time, China Mobile<\/strong> outlined its plans to deploy NFC in 2013 following the conclusion of its current trial. The service will launch in February 2013 in 12 provinces and aims to sell 10 million TD-SCDMA devices with NFC functionality in 2013 as well as recruiting 3 million users to the service. <\/p>\n It also announced that 8 handset manufacturers would supply NFC devices for China Mobile over the next year, and referred to a manufacturer\u2019s plan for 50 % of their TD-SCDMA devices to have NFC functionality in 2013. <\/p>\n \n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":" NFC for payments has been promised for a long while, but the difficulty of getting handsets, payment terminals, merchants, banks, card schemes and consumers all on board working together has meant that it has been a very slow project.
