Alcohol-related crimes encompass a wide range of offenses that are directly linked to the consumption of alcohol. These crimes can include but are not limited to driving under the influence (DUI), public intoxication, underage drinking violations, assault under the influence, and alcohol-related property damage.

Younger women experience low rates of AC, but the risk accelerates significantly in middle-aged and older women due to the cumulative effects of long-term alcohol consumption34,36. The gender-specific burden is also evident in years of life lost, as women tend to experience more severe health impacts from alcohol at lower consumption levels than men. These findings highlight the need for public health interventions targeting alcohol use reduction in midlife, while also addressing the unique physiological risks women face to prevent severe AC in older age. Estimates and credible intervals for establishment density and each crime outcome are shown in Table 2. Results were similar for estimates of the percent increase in each of the crime types resulting from a 20% increase in establishment density in a neighborhood with an average density, ranging from 3.9% to 4.3%.

Victims in alcohol-related violent incidents were less likely to have been emotionally affected ‘very much’ overall (in 19% of alcohol-related violent incidents) than victims in non-alcohol-related violent incidents (29%; Figure 5.12).
