Location-based Apps For iPhone Half The Price Of RIM Apps

compass-dollar.gifLocation-based applications are becoming more popular as better positioning systems are built into more mobile devices. This report analyzes the location-based apps from the Apple App Store, RIM App World, and Android Market.

The report was put together by Distimo - an apps store analytics company - in conjunction with Skyhook Wireless - a company that produces a hybrid mobile positioning system. It looks at the top downloads from each app store, as well as overall pricing trends.

Some of the key conclusions from the report include:

  • Apple’s App Store has the largest proportion of paid location based applications (57%) with Blackberry second (49%) and Google’s Android Market third (21%).
  • Despite the introduction of free Google Maps Navigation the average prices on Apple’s App Store and Google’s Android Market remained fairly stable .
  • The average price of location based applications on Blackberry’s App World is about twice as high as on the Apple App Store ($14.37 compared to $7.34)
