Shazam Announces Record Downloads And Major Ad Agreement

shazam.gifEvery once in awhile you come across an application or service that really seems like magic. For me, Shazam’s music discovery application is one of those magic services.

Shazam has been in the news recently, announcing some very impressive numbers, a new strategic investment, and an agreement with a major mobile ad network.

For those of you who have not used Shazam, it is very simple. Where ever you are, if you hear some bit of music that you like, you just launch Shazam, it “listens” to the music for a few seconds, and then tells you the name of the artist, the name of the track, and where you can download the track. Like I said – magic.

To date, Shazam has been used by more than 50 million people around the world. This represents a growth of over 40% in the past 7 months.

The service is now live in over 150 countries worldwide, and is available for download from the iPhone App Store (over 10 million downloads) as well as being amongst the highest downloaded applications on BlackBerry App World, Nokia’s Ovi Store and Google’s Android Market.

Shazam also recently announced a strategic investment from Kleiner Perkins Caufield and Byers, a San Francisco based VC firm that has been involved with several of the biggest high tech success stories such as Amazon and Google. The KPCB investment is being made from its iFund and will enable Shazam’s global expansion through adding additional languages and mobile platforms.

Finally, Shazam and mobile ad network 4th Screen announced a Europe-wide partnership that will see Shazam using 4th Screen’s ad sales team and ad serving platform to place targeted ads in the Shazam service in UK, Germany, France and Spain.

4th Screen will use the the music track information for ad targeting, along with standard targeting parameters such as handset and time of day.

Andrew Fisher, CEO of Shazam said, “Shazam is profitable and experiencing sustained acceleration in its growth rate… Not only are significantly more people around the world accessing the service every day, they are using it with increased frequency, discovering and acquiring new music and sharing their discoveries with friends all from their mobile phones.”
